My book is out!
June 18, 2008 3:29 pm BooksMy first book was recently published — and copies are positively flying off the shelves! Admittedly, the book doesn’t have much to do with the Adriatic. But it is about Central European cultural history, so that’s pretty close to what I do on this site.
The book is Music Makes the Nation, and it explores how music was used in nineteenth-century nationalist movements. I focus on three influential nationalist composers: Richard Wagner in Germany, Bedrich Smetana in the Czech lands, and Edvard Grieg in Norway. In other news, the blog will be slowing down a bit in the coming months. I’ll be spending much of the summer on the road in Europe, and when I’m not traveling, I’ll be working hard writing A Traveller’s History of Croatia, which will be published by Interlink Publishers in the US and Arris Books in the UK. So even if my thousands of loyal fans are disappointed at sporadic blog posts, you’ll have the new Croatia book to look forward to!

You wrote a book? Who knew. You know I would rush out and buy a copy but I’m just a poor student. If it ever goes on sale I’ll pick it up, but clearly it won’t because it is in such high demand. I’ll just trust that it is a work of pure genius from what I know of the author. Maybe if you would’ve taken the - off the end of my a I would shell out some hard cash for this little gem. Congrats

Congratulations on the website and the book and many thanks for the link to Croatia Online. I’ve also had my first book published - the Croatia Cruising Companion, covering the Dalmatian Coast and Islands,(see website above) so I know what it feels like and how much hard work it is! I’m looking forward to reading your Travellers’ Guide - good luck with that.
Re your first book, you might be interested in Mediterranean Mosaic published by Routledge. I found out about it doing some research on Klapa Music. I spoke to Josko Caleta who’s an expert on the subject and he wrote a section of this book
